Alternative Press Expo

Girl n’ Robot at APE

Posted on:  September 25, 2011

Just finished a limited edition GIRL N’ ROBOT comic print which will be available only the ALTERNATIVE PRESS EXPO next weekend.  So what’s this Girl n Robot thing anyway?  The setup is simple:  It’s a little girl named Candace and a robot she calls Boxy and they get into all sorts of nonsensical hi-jinx.  In other words, pretty much anything goes.

In addition to this 50 sheet run of prints I’ll also have a few hand drawn originals for sale on my table. The print is an absolute bargain at $5  $2 each.  Hope to see you there!

If you are (or will be) in San Francisco next weekend, come by and hang with us at this year’s ALTERNATIVE PRESS EXPO, October 1st and 2nd at the Concourse Exhibition Center in Downtown San Francisco.  Octavio Rodriguez and I will be at table 202 so stop by and say hello.

It’s the coolest little book convention in the world with filled with stuff you won’t find anywhere so come check it out.  I’ll have copies of STEEL NOODLES No. 1 as well as sketchcards and original art for sale.

STEEL NOODLES Number 2 Delayed

Posted on:  May 11, 2011

Due to time constraints, I am pushing the release of STEEL NOODLES Number 2 which will now debut at this year’s ALTERNATIVE PRESS EXPO, October 1st and 2nd at the Concourse Exhibition Center in San Francisco.

The book is really coming together well but the demanding schedules at work have really cut into production time.  Debuting at Comic-Con is always my goal but sometimes the timing just doesn’t work out.

I thank all of you amazing fans of the book for your continued support and words of encouragement and hope you stick around as the Advent story concludes in book 2.

APE 2010: Thank You San Francisco!

The ALTERNATIVE PRESS EXPO rocked!!  Proving to me once again why it’s the premier venue for art and comics.  Extreme gratitude to all who came by and bought STEEL NOODLES Number 2.  To my fellow artists, you continue to inspire me and your friendship is pure gold.

We will do it all again next year.

APE this weekend!

Really excited to be back at my fave convention of all, The ALTERNATIVE PRESS EXPO!  It’s going to be a great time so come by and say hello! I’ve got hand drawn goodness in the form of Sketch cards and of course, that little something called STEEL NOODLES Number 1.   I’m joined once again by my pal Octavio Rodriguez  and this year we’re at table 203.  (Click on the floor plan for location info)

Zombies, Scoundrels and Shrunken Heads

Posted on:  October 5, 2010

As the title implies, I’ve been sketching some amusingly odd head shots of people (and ex-people) who may be quite at home at some traveling freak show (if those still exist) or perhaps, they’re the ones that kind of pop out from seemingly nowhere and give you something to think about.

Debuting at the ALTERNATIVE PRESS EXPO are the first series of hand drawn 2 1/2 x 3 1/2 sketch cards I’m calling Zombies, Scoundrels and Shrunken Heads.  These are mixed media sketches which include ink, marker, watercolor and pretty much whatever I can’t get my hands on.

No two are alike and if you’re into collecting odd stuff, this has got your name on it. Swing by and take a gander at table 203.  I’ll also have them with me for next month’s CTN Animation Expo for all of you in Southern California.

Road Trippin’

Posted on:  September 29, 2010

To close out 2010, I’ll be exhibiting at two amazing venues at both northern and southern California starting with the ALTERNATIVE PRESS EXPO, Saturday and Sunday, October 16th and 17th at the Concourse Exhibition Center in downtown San Francisco.  There i’ll be joined by good friend and colleague Octavio Rodriguez as we once again help celebrate the best in independent art and comics.

Then, from November 18th to the 21st, i’ll be exhibiting at the 2nd annual CTN ANIMATION EXPO which will be held at the Marriott Hotel and Convention Center in Burbank.  (Right across from the Burbank Bob Hope Airport) The expo is a great place to network with animation professionals, students and artists as well as avail of the many workshops and lectures organized by the Creative Talent Network.  The inaugural expo last year was a huge, runaway success so this year is gearing up to be bigger and better than ever.  Featuring a tremendous array of artist exhibitors and guest speakers headlined by a rare appearance by the legendary french illustrator Jean “MOEBIUS” Giraud  (The Adventures of Blueberry, The Airtight Garage, The Fifth Element) and the acclaimed Japanese designer Tadahiro Uesugi, (Coraline) CTN Expo is positioned to be the premiere animation centric event in the industry.

Of course, I’ll have copies of STEEL NOODLES Number 1 as well as some new convention exclusives.  So make plans to come and see us in the fall!

APE Sketches

Posted on:  December 4, 2008

Here’s another couple of sketches from my trip to San Francisco for the Alternative Press Expo.  This was done right at our table at APE.  This gentleman browsed our table for quite a while so I able to capture him in sketch.   Done in pencil and watercolor.

The one below are some walking poses as well as some character studies.  They’re not from life but having a crowd streaming around you helps get you in the right frame of mind.  Done on the Modbook on Adobe Photoshop with a modified watercolor brush set at 5 pixels, 40 percent opacity.

Airplane Sketch

Posted on:  November 18, 2008

During the short, one hour flight from Los Angeles to Oakland on my way to APE earlier in the month, I snuck in a quick Modbook sketch while the plane cruised at an altitude of around 26 thousand feet.  It was a rainy weekend in the bay area which made for a really choppy ride and despite the constant rolling and lurching, I was able to accomplish my goal of sketching 4 figures.

Three was what I initially aimed for but I thought if I skipped the peanut and beverage service, I could squeeze in a fourth and I was right.
This was done on Adobe Photoshop using a modified watercolor brush set at around 60 percent opacity, 100 percent flow.  For the tones I dialed the opacity to the desired setting.  The dimensions are 10 by 6 inches with resolution set at 100 dpi.
I also managed some traditional sketching with pencil and watercolor during APE.  I’ll share those sometime later in another post.

APE 2008 Recap

Posted on:  November 3, 2008

I‘m back from the ALTERNATIVE PRESS EXPO in San Francisco where a good time was had by all. It’s been re-affirmed to Octavio and I why APE is the best convention around. Great people. Fantastic art. Cool Vibe.

Thanks to all who visited us over the weekend and to those who bought our humble offerings, our eternal thanks. It was truly a remarkable experience and we hope to see all of you bay area folk again next year.

Of course the only thing better than selling is buying.  Some of the choice titles I acquired where the lovely Totoro Forest Project Book.  Bill Presing’s Bookplate Betties, Gipi’s They Found the Car, Matthew Forsythe’s Ojingogo, Sho Murase’s Kakure Tenshi and Enrico Casarosa’s brand new Venice Chronicles.  I could have gotten more stuff but I would have had to pay and arm and a leg at the airport for going over the weight limit on my suitcase.

Now for the pics. (and the lack thereof)

Signing at the Fantagraphics table was Fuzz & Pluck creator Ted Stearn (foreground) and Ghost World and Art School Confidential’s Dan Clowes

After a Saturday of steady rain, the sun came out Sunday and managed to give our table a little extra attention

The acclaimed cartoonist Chris Ware signed books at Drawn & Quarterly

The hardest working trio in animation.  (L-R) Ghostbot’s Alan Lau, Brad Rau and Roque Ballesteros.
…but the real reason APE is the coolest convention?… they serve BOOZE!
